On my favorite block in Chinatown sits Sofie Pavitt HQ, right in the very same building as the studio where she regularly sees clients. It’s also stone’s throw from an original Outdoor Voices store, hence the sentimentality. The setup is great because Sofie can literally head downstairs between meetings, speak to people about their skincare concerns, and hear real-time feedback that eventually shapes the products of her brand. We filmed our video podcast in one of the treatment rooms (elite lighting) while clients buzzed in and out all afternoon.

Up a flight of stairs in a building in Chinatown is where you’ll find Sofie Pavitt Face HQ. Here I am, fresh off a flight as per usual, elite beverage in hand: Balthazar’s Ginger Citrus Tea. Get it hot or iced.

The office is drenched in light with lots of comfy seating options. Shades of green and lots of checkered prints, very on-brand for the… well, brand. Lol.

Sofie is a pro at tackling all skincare concerns, though a lot of her clients and customers are particularly impressed with how effective each SKU is at tackling acne and blemishes. My personal favorite product is the omega-rich moisturizer but the TYB community is particularly ~obsessed~ with the Mandelic clearing serum.

Sofie explained that each product is actually color-coded, Sofie Pavitt's color-coded: green for cleansers, yellow for treatment steps (like the Mandelic Clearing Serum), and blue for hydrators.

We asked Sofie Pavitt what was inside her archival Louis Vuitton bag (she used to design handbags, FYI) and, naturally, out came sunnies and tins of sardines. She was also meeting up with Sandy Liang after the shoot and had a stash of products she wanted to bring her.

On this episode: The founder of Sofie Pavitt Face on going from designing handbags to her own skincare brand and giving some of the most sought-after facials in NYC.

To back it up a bit… Sofie Pavitt built her brand from the treatment room up. Before there was a product line, there was her clinic in New York, where she became known for a very specific approach to skin: practical and deeply personalized.

What started with facials (especially for acne-prone skin) turned into a tightly edited line of products designed to do exactly what her clients needed. What set it apart early on was the way Sofie translated client concerns into products that solved them.

Sofie Pavitt Face is a brand where results come first, but the trust is what keeps people coming back. It’s not just about clearer skin (though yes, the Mandelic Serum has a bit of an ~obsession~ around it), it’s about understanding your own skin and creating a routine that makes sense for you.

Sofie demystifies skincare, and that’s why people trust her. Myself included. I’ve used tubs of the Omega repair cream at this point.

On this episode: SET Active founder Lindsey Carter on matching sets and building a brand that people want to live in.

To back it up a bit… SET Active launched in 2018 with the idea to make activewear that feels good to wear, fits well, and comes in colors you can’t find anywhere else. What started with a few core pieces turned into a full uniform.

What really set it apart early on was the way Lindsey built it: in public. She asked her audience what they wanted, teased colors, got real-time feedback, and actually applied it to the SKUs and the way they operated.

SET is a brand where the community came first and never left. It’s not just about the clothes (though yes, the colors, the fits, the fabric are a bit of an ~obsession~ of ours), but also the feeling around it. There’s real excitement and anticipation around drops.

Lindsey is a founder who makes you feel like you’re in on it with her. That’s because you are.

And that openness is intentional. At one point on the pod she talks about how, when it comes to oversharing and people’s reactions, “I think who I am in real life is also who you see on the internet.” It’s something she’s gotten pushback for over the years, but she sees it as part of the strategy.

Ceremonia HQ

BABBA WEARING ARCHIVAL OUTDOOR VOICES.

Ceremonia HQ is covered with vibrant art, with many of the pieces by Mexico City-based artist Enrique Pichardo.

Babba walked through Ceremonia’s latest and greatest launch, the Pequi flyaway gel, which is essentially lip gloss for your baby hairs and flyaways. It works in nanoseconds. This is a PR mailer that came with a pocket mirror and phone mount.

To back it up a bit… I first met Babba Rivera at an Outdoor Voices Dog Jog about a decade ago, puppy Blue in hand. And now, very full circle, her office window overlooks the exact spot where we met.

Babba is one of the kindest and most magnetic people I know. She radiates warmth the second you’re around her. She’s also built a mega haircare brand rooted in Latinx culture and ingredients (I’m ~obsessed with the guava line, pun obviously intended).
